Ethics 2.0 - Detox my Fashion
"Detox My Fashion"
-- My thoughts on "Victoria's Secret and Nike Are Breaking a Very Important Promise" written by Charles ManningULy 11, 2016. --
In 20ll Greenpeace launched "Detox My Fashion" campaign, in order for brands like VS to detox their supply chains by 2020.
This alone could have a huge beneficial impact on the environment if the companies commit to the campaign, because with fashion being the 2nd most polluting industry in the world. Something must be sorted out, especially with big name brands.
76 brands signed Greenpeaces plan, among them were, Victoria secret, Nike, Zara, Adidas, Mango. After only 5 years of this campaign H&M and Zara were well on their way to reaching the deadline by disclosing information on supplies and hazardous chemicals which had been discarded and choosing alternative safer chemicals, in order to implement concrete plans to stay on track and reach the goal for 2020.
Brands like Mango and Burberry are falling behind of track and are in danger of not meeting the deadline however still have time to make up for it. Unlike the company Victoria secret, obviously.
Victoria Secret have taken very few steps towards the plan, showing no transparency towards the types and amount of hazardous chemicals discharged when making their products, and also having no set concrete set plan for the future. Its clear to say they will not be meeting the deadline, let alone getting anywhere close!
I can personally say I'm disappointed in Victoria Secret. But it was expected. After all the research on their ethics, its clear to say they have non and they definitely need to consider this for the future. Even if they was to just bring out a eco line. I personally think it would boost sales, with people knowing they are having a positive impact on the environment.
I will be doing a future post on how Victoria Secrets could improve their ethical approach.
