Ethics 1.0 - Environment
Why does Victoria's Secret have angels, when they have devil natures?
Within this current generation the thing that is constantly posted about on social media is the environment and how we are slowly destroying it. Human impact is killing the earth. So I thought the first piece of research would be on Victoria's Secrets ethical presentation and how they help the environment. Or should we say not help?
A major issue in todays society is how we as humans are impacting the environment and the people around us. Although it is a topic which is often spoken about, nothing is ever actually done about it. Or at least its never done by big company's who could actually make a difference.
Fashion is the second largest polluter on the earth, after the oil industry.
Lets get you some quick facts on the topic of fashions effect on the environment:
-20% of industrial water pollution comes from the dying and treatment of materials in factories.
-90% of water waste from factories in developing countries is dumped into rivers without treatment, causing further pollution.
-1.5 trillion litres of water is used by the fashion industry each year.
-190,000 tons of textile microplastic fibres are in the ocean every year, eaten up by fish which we often then consume.
-1kg of chemicals is used to make 1kg of textiles
-23kg of greenhouse gases is made per kilogram of fabric produced in industry.
So where does Victoria's Secret come into this? Well they are apart of those facts above, due to the nature of the brand they contribute to a lot of pollution. Often more bothered about the amount of money they make rather than the impact they have on the surrounding environment.
So let me tell you what Victoria Secret don't do.
-Within their collections they do not use eco-friendly materials
-Many companies have a greenhouse gas emission reduction target, however Victoria Secret has shown no support in this or interest towards getting one.
On the positive side...
They have set a deadline for 2020 to elimination any hazardous chemicals and to be complied to a restricted substance list for their products. They also have intentions to reduce water in manufacture however have not set a specific target yet.
So as you now know VS are far from angels and they are many rooms for improvement within this section of research.
