So I decided to interview to lads on their view on the shop, as I believe its very important what they think and how they see the store. Although male customers isn't something that Victoria Secret aim for but there is a big male gaze within the way Victoria Secret looks. They do aim to please, and Personally sexualise women.
Interview
Dan Conner
1 - Do you know what Victoria Secret is?
yes its a brand that sells clothes
Yes, a women’s underwear/ lingerie fashion label
2 - What are your views on the brand?
Its kinda like, stuff that men would enjoy seeing on women, like underwear and stuff
Pretty non-existent, the first thing I think of is sexy underwear for women
3 - What are the first 5 words that come to your head when you hear Victoria Secret?
Pink, underwear, women, sexy, models. skinny models
1. Sexy 2. Underwear 3. Angels 4. Lingerie 5.models
4 - Do you agree that VS should use plus size models? Why?
I think it should be both plus size and petite models, its discrimination towards them
Yes. I think every fashion label, male or female should use plus size models because the models used are not accurate representations of your average person, thus leading both males and females to constantly try make themselves look better which often fills ones head with negative thoughts and anxiety. I understand why fashion labels use the type of models they use but they either don’t realise or care the knock on effect if has on youth culture.
5 - Would you ever go shopping in VS for a partner, girlfriend etc
yes, because they have quite nice clothing for women
Yes
6 - How would you describe VS Angels?
Ethically quite diverse but they are all quite petite, as in skinny. non of them are big, like large. Just skinny
Skinny, tall, pretty, tanned
7 - Do you believe VS has a male gaze?
Yes I do, because on the videos they are all walking in a sexy way and showing their bodies
I believe is has an element of male gaze yes, a lot of their products you could say males would like them just as much as their girlfriends do. The advertising of VS does a bit too, men who what the VS fashion shows maybe watching for another reason other than the fashion itself.
8 - Have you ever gone in a VS shop?
Yes but not with intention to buy anything
YES
9 - Do you have any recommendations for VS?
Make use a winder range of plus size models
As for marketing women’s underwear, no because the first thing I think of when hearing the name is underwear so their spot on there. As for the models, maybe they should think about have more realistic models to show there products, I understand why they use the models they do there very attractive more men and women and everyone knows beauty sells well, but maybe they should think about the affect it has on us all.
