online primary research - Social Media

Social Media research

So I decided to run some small surveys on social media, because I believe they are more effective in getting peoples opinions straight away rather then running of someone els data. I did this through Instagram and Twitter.

So i first started in Instagram and uploaded a poll with a picture on my story, meaning people only had 24hours to answer. my question was:

"Do you think Victoria Secret sexualises or empowers women?"

So my followers could then either pick "sex" or "power, giving a quick and easy answer, while simply getting peoples opinions. This was the result...

So 60 people thought VS sexualises women, while only 33 people thought it empowered them. And i think that says alot! Majority of my followers are either teenagers or young adults, meaning they are the correct audience that Victoria Secret usely target. So for their  target market to think this is quite bad in some aspects.

When looking at my results, iv noticed that all the lads voted for SEX and it was all girls that chose for EMPOWEMENT. And i honestly dont know what to say about that, because it could be taken two ways. Obviously VS targets girls/women so for 33 of them to pick power is good because its giving a good impression. however for all the lads to pick sex it shows that VS are successful in making sexy underwear but they are also showing a very sexy way of advertising which is objectifying women, selling sex.

I then posted another, commenting on the VS Angels. This one was for people to comment on, giving proper feedback. This asked:

"How would you describe the VS Angels? Are they role models?"

I got a lot less people replying to this because it involved more effort to answer, as it wasn't as easy as pressing a button. But these are the responses i got...

Some of the comments were expecting which is good cause it shows that what I'm researching is true, as real people actually think it.

"They dont look like the general public"
"unrealistic models"
"fit as fuck"
"seem to limit what seems beautiful"

I also got two people pop up to me and gave a more opinions.

I am quite proud of the outcome of the results on Instagram and I think ill be using the platform again to get public research.

I then did a poll on twitter, where I have lower followers number so i had less people reply. But it was nice to see that it got the same outcome as my poll on Instagram.

However this time the "empower" choice got more votes with 44%, however "sexual" still won with 56%, but they are alot closer then the score on Instagram.

I think its good to get primary research like this cause its quick and effective, plus is very simple to do. However it only works if your looking at a young target audience, which thankfully i am.
